Rare Popple Puppet Ad Campaign - $750 - (Murrieta, CA)
Now here is something extremely rare for the real Popples collector, or Mattel fan. I feel safe in saying you will never see anything like this listed again, and all the materials are in excellent condition as having been in storage since 1985. The Mattel Popples project was a joint venture with American Greeting Cards. It was designed to have toys, cartoons, TV series and a line of several characters. It was slated to be revealed at the annual toy manufacturers' convention in 1986 at the New Orleans Convention Center. The product push was then to go world wide in the spring. That's where I come into the story. I was contracted to produce an in-store puppet show to introduce the back story and characters to the public. The shows were presented using our Walking Puppet Stage(TM). We constructed 35 units, each with a custom Popple hand puppet, and a seven minute pre-recorded show, set in the language of the country where the unit was to be used for marketing. We also produced a training manual for the assembly and use of the Walking Puppet Stage(TM), and instructions for performing the show. The show was relatively easy to perform as it was all recorded on a small tape player. All you had to do was throw the switch and move the mouth of the puppet. The shows were very successful, and were used both in the store and for marketing appearances around town (as you can see by the main picture). At the end of the marketing promotion (because of trademark restrictions I believe) all of the field units were destroyed. However in my shop I stored back up equipment in reserve in case it was needed during the promotion.
