In the mid to late 1800's, whaling ships that traveled along the Alaskan coastline started trading many goods with Alaska Natives. Some of these goods included flour and sugar, which were held in large printed and solid cotton sacks. With the innovative and waste-free nature of Alaskan culture, Native women throughout the state started designing tops for themselves and their families out of this material. They based their designs after fur and intestine parkas they wore during long winters. With the introduction of this cotton material a new world was opened up for people across Alaska to wear a comfortable, breathable, lightweight garment during the warmer months. Qaspeqs are traditionally worn for many occasions including berry picking, hunting, dancing and drumming.
