Outstanding 4" High Mississippian Human Effigy Pipe - X Cowan Hood - COA - $1,799 - (Irvine, KY)
For your consideration, I'm offering this extremely rare, outstanding example Mississippian "Female Effigy with Baskets on Back" Pipe. From Perry County, Arkansas. Standing 4 1/8" tall by 4 1/4" long. Shell tempered. The pipe depicts a woman carrying two baskets on her back holding one up with each hand. The baskets contain the pipe stem and bowl. Ex Cowan Hood collection from Tennessee. The Hood collection was featured in "Who's Who in Indian Relics" Volume 3 & 5. One small chip in stem area as shown in photos. Two prehistoric drying cracks in the pottery from original manufacture as shown in photos. Very solid. No repair of any kind whatsoever. Completely original as found. No other damage noted. Age is circa 1300BP - 400BP. Certificate of authentication from Insight Evaluation, Coshocton, Ohio. If you do not accept the opinion of the authenticator please do not bid.
