This is an early letter, typed and hand-signed by future Secretary of defense, Thomas Soverign Gates, Jr. Dated December 12, 1949, it measures about 8" x 10" and is in generally clean condition with the original, even folds. From Wikipedia on Gates: Thomas Sovereign Gates, Jr. (April 10, 1906 – March 25, 1983) was United States Secretary of Defense from 1959 to 1961 under President Eisenhower. He was promoted from deputy secretary of defense. During his tenure, he established a task force to set nuclear target priorities.
