Antique National Vulcanized Fibre Company Wooden Spool; Lestershire Spool & MFG. Co. This is a wooden spool from the the National Vulcanized Fibre Company, and manufactured by the Lestershire Spool & Bobbin Company. This one is in excellent condition for its age.The spool is approximately 6 3/4 inches tall, 3 1/2 inches in diameter. Markings on the spool are "5 LESTERSHIRE PAT. NO. 23003660 44". The ends of the spool are made of vulcanized hard rag fibre and the bushing is made of dogwood. As a point of interest, through a history of inventions and company mergers since 1859, the Vulcanized Fibre Company was formed in 1884. Over the decades, additional consolidation and mergers led to the formation of the National Vulcanized Fibre Company in 1922. In 1965 the name was changed again to the NVF Company in order to avoid confusion over the years with a new and changing product lines. NVF still produces many fine products today, making this spool a part of living history.
