Denomination: 8 RealeWeight: 18.2Grade: 2Mint: Potosi Nuestra SeƱora de Atocha ("Our Lady of Atocha") was the most famous of a fleet of Spanish ships that sank in 1622 off the Florida Keys while carrying copper, silver, gold, tobacco, gems, jewels, jewelry, and indigo from Spanish ports at Cartagena and Porto Bello in New Granada (current Colombia and Panama, respectively) and Havana bound for Spain. The ship was named for the parish of Atocha in Madrid. The ship was discovered and recovered in 1985 by Mel Fisher's Treasure Salvors, Inc. after a 16+ year search for the shipwreck. This coin was minted at the Potosi Mint by assayer B 1589-1615. The obverse bears the royal shield and crown of Phillip III of Spain with the mintmark P to the left and the assayer's mark B below. The denomination is in Roman Numerals oVIII to the right. The reverse has a Crusader's Cross with lions and castles. The coin weighs 18,2 grams, which means it hasn't lost much weight in its 363 years under water. It was found as part of the Motherlode of the Atocha in 1985, as evidenced by the 85A number above. Regular Grade Two coins sell for over $2,000. when they are this nice at the museum in Key West.
