Beautiful Antique Vintage Quilt Block Squares Lot of 5 Original Redwork Embroidery Bear on All Fours Hand quilted, hand embroidered, original old cotton batting with some shifting/bunching c1920s to 1940s 10 1/2 inches square each Five quilt block squares. Almost no fading, no stitch pulls, raw edges on each side of each square, original cotton batting showing some shifting/bunching in spots. Two squares have one minor fabric tear each in red border area (see photos). No age discolouration, only 1 tiny spot/mark that I can find on any square, really clean and fresh white cotton with red cotton border, white backing fabric. Suitable for incorporating into nursery quilt and pillow, or wall hanging or even framing as nursery wall decor. Redwork outline embroidery believed to have originated in Europe in the 19th Century and traveled to America prior to the war between the states. Cotton processors in Turkey used a special dye process to make the new cotton embroidery threads colourfast, important for quilts that were to be washed and used in daily life. Penny 6 inch muslin squares were sold in dry goods shops through the start of WWII with simple designs for redwork embroidery. Redwork embroidery enjoying a resurgence in popularity.
