Item Description: This mixed media painting was done by Michigan artist, Zubel Kachadoorian (1924-2002). Between 1950 and 1953, Zubel studied in Europe. So, because this painting is dated 1952, it was done somewhere in Europe. It reminds me most of Rome, the figure is perhaps a nun? The archways and wide stone steps remind me of the many old churches and buildings of Rome. The painting measures 11" by 7 5/8" inside the mat. Including the frame it measures 17 3/4" by 13 5/8". The painting has been matted, framed in a wooden frame and covered with what feels to be plexiglass. The frame has some nicks and scratches which could be easily touched up. The outer black frame has an inner frame of grey that accents the painting very nicely. The painting is signed and dated in the lower right, Zubel '52. The painting is in very good condition. Zubel attended several American Art schools and studied with Francis De Erdely and Carlos Lopez. He was awarded the Pepsi-Cola Midwest Fellowship, the Prix-de Rome Fellowship by the American Academy in Rome, the Richard and Linda Rosenthal Award by the National Institute of Arts and Letters, and the Creative Artists Grant in Sculpture and Painting by the Michigan Council for the Arts. Zubel spent many years in Europe studying and working abroad in France, Spain, Italy, Greece, and North Africa. Zubel's art is in the collections of the Detroit Institute of Arts, the Smithsonian Institution, the Wooster Massachusetts Art Museum, the Tate Gallery in London, and University of Michigan among many others.
