Think, perhaps, of a crack in a wall through which you can see the lovely, crumbling texture of an interior of bricks. I've just taken this as a step toward the abstract by making the outer surface a completely empty space. Relying on strong textures in the composition with appliqued bricks, the painting will change moods as the ambient light shifts. Think of it as an abstracted realism.
