1795 S76b R1 Liberty Cap Large Cent Flipover Double Struck PCGS VF35 March Wells - $6,500 - (Springfield, MO)
Offered by Shawn A. Yancey of Earlycoppercoins, EAC #4647. 1795 S76b Liberty Cap large cent, Plain Edge, R1. This coin has been authenticated and graded by PCGS as VF35, and it's a Flipover Double Struck Mint Error, too. This coin was lot #560 of the Goldberg's 02/01/09 auction of the March Wells collection, where Bob Grellman described it as: "1795 S-76b R1. PCGS graded VF-35. Plain Edge. Flipover Triple Strike. Glossy medium brown and chocolate with both tones delicately woodgrained on the obverse. The surfaces are smooth, free of any trace of corrosion or verdigris. No notable contact marks on either side. This cent was struck at least 3 times (even though the PCGS label says "Flipover Double Struck"). The first two strikes were nearly centered on the planchet but were offset by a 5-10 degree rotation between those impressions. This is clearly visible at AMER where the obverse cap is boldly doubled with a 1-2 millimeter separation between those impressions. The double struck planchet was then flipped over and struck once more slightly off center to K-10 but with all the designs still on the planchet. Ample evidence of the undertype first two strikes is visible on the right half of both sides. A choice example of a spectacular mint error. Our grade is VF20 choice. The attribution, flipover double struck, and March Wells provenance are all noted on the PCGS label. Estimated Value $5,000-UP. Ex 2005 EAC Sale, McCawley & Grellman Auctions 4/23/05:125."
