Antique French Napoleon III Marquetry Box with Brass Inlay - $245 - (Manti, UT)

This is a lovely French Antique Marquetry Inlaid Wooden box made during the Napoleon III Period which lasted from 1848 until 1870. The top has a beautiful inlay of brass which the photos show well. Probably owned by a wealthy family, boxes such as this were used for a variety of purposes, jewelry, sewing, storing small personal treasures, etc. It is made of solid wood with veneers of what appear to be walnut, mahogany, and rosewood. Edges have a wood inlay, possibly walnut also. There are no major problems that we could note but the veneer does show light checking and there is a very tiny chip (1/16 of an inch) in the veneer on the back right bottom, all signs of its age but also of over 150 years of loving use.. It has a lock but the key is missing. Hinges are original and tight. The original lining has been lost and a previous owner has lined it with a vinyl material that is functional but out of character for the box. A new owner may wish to replace it with a silk lining which it likely had at one time. We found it in a Paris Antique market but unfortunately, have no information or story about it. It is a stunning box, one that would be a lovely addition to any collection of fine French antique boxes and one that certainly could be used and functional. A wonderful gift reasonably priced for this type of antique box. It measures 9.5 inches long, 6.5 inches wide, four inches tall and weighs not quite two pounds. Please note that we will ship it for the actual cost of shipping with no additional service or handling fees.
