Syracuse Picture Button – The Goddess Nike – Charioteer One and five-eighths inch across This 19th century button pays homage to the Syracuse Coin, referred to by many numismatists as the most beautiful coin of ancient times. Nike, the Goddess of strength, speed, and victory is shown showering rewards on the victorious charioteer. The Coin: SYRACUSE, Dionysius I, 406–367. Decadrachm c. 400 BC, Attic standard, AR 43.40 g. Work signed by the engraver Euainetos. Quadriga galloping left, driven by charioteer holding kentron in right hand and reins in left, crowned by Nike flying right; in exergue, suit of defensive armour consisting of shield, cuirass between two graves, and helmet.
