19th Century American Folk Art Oil Painting attr.to Robert Street circa 1840 - $885 - (West Haven, CT)
"19TH C. FOLK ART PORTRAIT" Listed for auction is this New York estate fresh nineteenth century unsigned American Philadelphia/Germantown Folk Art oil portrait on canvas circa 1840's. The portrait is in the likeness of an unknown young woman sitter dressed in a period black satin gown with a white lace collar. The painting is in the manner, style, and size, of Robert Street, a well known and listed Germantown born painter who was active in Pennsylvania/Phialadelphia during the early and mid-nineteeth century. Original Newman Galleries label on the reverse of the frame. The painting measures 39 3/4" x 25 1/2" (stretcher bars) and is framed in it's original 5" wide frame for overall dimensions of 39" x 34". It has been cleaned, re-lined, and varnished at some point in the past. There is an old vintage gallery label on the back of the frame from "Newman Galleries, 1625 Walnut Street, Philadelphia" a well established 5th generation, and oldest, gallery in Philadelphia, still in operation today. The gallery label looks to date from about the 1950's, which would most likely date the restoration. During a telephone conversation with one of the current family owners it was determined that due to the fact the painting has no visible inventory number that it can't be determined whether it was ever in their inventory or sold through their gallery, although there may be an inventory number on the back of the original canvas which was subsequently covered by the restorative relining. It was also determined that due to the presence of their gallery label the painting was more than likely cleaned and restored by their restoration department at some point in the past. The label looks to date from about the 1940's. The painting is in fine restored condition with craquelere and about a half dozen 1/8" round spots of paint loss that have been colored in as seen.
