Douglas Staten was an African American painter, sculptor, and illustrator who worked in both Indianapolis and New York City. While in New York he founded a black oriented greeting card company called Stanita, which emphasized pictures and messages proclaiming black pride and solidarity. His first run of 100,000 cards was sold out within one month.
