Vintage Gulf/Caribbe Lightning Whelk Sinistrofulgur Perversum 11 1/2 Inches - $40 - (Sylacauga, AL)

Whelks shells spiral from the left hand side. Primitives put superstitious significance to this fact, and used them in ceremony. They also have a practical use in holding liquid. The shell is easily sharpened to make cutting implements. Whelk bleaches relatively quickly in the Sun. There is only a little color remaining on this one.
