Fante Asafo Flag - an early Hand-Painted example Military Company Flag, or Frankaa , from Colonial Africa possibly represents a figure or company called Crazy Horse (see notation below) possibly Victorian era, and very rare as such! This example has no Union Jack canton, or any other canton, and it does not have a fringed border or tassels around the border: It has a very simple edge / border. These are all a proper indication of its age! All figures hand painted, the letters all stenciled in paint, and the "No 4" made of sewn-on cloth. Only the large central figure of the horse and rider is also painted on the reverse, as seen in photos. Note that this main figure being the only image represented on the reverse is also apparently an indication of age and originality! An exceptional early Fante Asafo Frankaa ! Investment quality African art ! The Fante people, in the area of the Gold Coast alongside the Ashanti, in what is now Ghana, formed defensive groups and used these types of flags to distinguish their regiment or military companies This example up for auction was for Number 4 Company or 4th Regiment The text, in Ghanaian Ashanti, reads: P?NK? AB?DAM A NOWURAN ?MB?DAM BI part of which may translate to Crazy Horse There is a possible other translation, which may be: "if the horse is mad, or crazy, the rider is also not mad", which may try to indicate that the rider, representing the company, can control any situation Made of a very soft material, probably cotton.
