EARLY TURN OF THE CENTURY IMPROVED ORDER of RED MEN LODGE SIGN PLAQUE - $260 - (Russellville, OH)

Acquired from an estate. This listing is for a Early "Improved Order of Red Men" Fraternal Lodge Sign. Wood oval sign, turn of the century, with a folk art carved native American Indian with headdress in center, carved hatchet and pipe on left side and the carved letters I O R M, lower right. Measures approx. 17-1/4" x 14-1/2". The Improved Order of Red Men, trace there beginnings to 1834 as an offshoot to the Society of Red Men which traces it's roots back to the Sons of Liberty and the Boston Tea Party where the Sons of Liberty dressed as Native Americans. Probably was displayed in a lodge hall known as Wigwams. They adopted the culture of Native American Indians by using their rituals and dressing as Native Americans. In original finish and paint.
