Field Marshal Garnet Wolseley, 1st Viscount Wolseley [1833-1913] was an influential British commander who was victorious in the Ashanti War and against the Mahdists in the Sudan. Because of his attention to detail the phrase "All Sir Garnet" came to mean everything's in order. In 1880-81, Sir Edward Watkin with the South Eastern Railway began digging at Shakespeare Cliff (between Folkestone and Dover) in preparation for building a tunnel under the English Channel to link England with France. Sir Garnet Wolseley was opposed to the tunnel on the grounds that a continental army could seize the tunnel exit by surprise. Many feared that the French might use the tunnel to invade England and, despite Watkin's skilled attempts at garnering political support, work was abandoned on the project when relations with France became strained over conflicting Egyptian policies. A Parliamentary committee appointed to inquire into the desirability of a tunnel was unable to reach an agreement and the Channel Tunnel was abandoned in July 1883. It took more than a 100 years before a tunnel linking England to France was finally built. I UNCONDITIONALLY GUARANTEE THE AUTHENTICITY OF THE ABOVE AUTOGRAPH! NO RESERVE!!! TERMS: Shipping charges…
