Sphero-Conical Shaped Vessel 11th-13th Century - $300 - (Langhorne, PA)

Sphero-conical shaped vessel11-13th centuryAfghanistan region The group of objects characterized by the sphero-conical body have been the subject of debate over the years with suggestions that these objects were used as hand-grenades, perfume flasks, “fire-blowers”, mercury bottles, plumb bobs to beer and wine flasks. All of these objects have similar characteristics such as a constricted neck often with a pronounced groove beneath the lip (a feature that enables a stopper to be tied down) and the opening is usually no more than a few millimeters in diameter. The walls of the vessels are usually of significant thickness which gives the object weight and strength, and are impermeable. They are found throughout the Islamic world in very much the same form from Egypt to Central Asia. The finish varies from the most basic to the highly ornamental indicating that the object must have had served different functions with some holding social significance and status. Whatever their uses, sphero-conical vessels appear to be confined to the early and medieval Islamic periods, whereas in later periods either different vessels were found more appropriate or the uses they served died out. RETURN POLICY: Authenticity 100% guaranteed. Return at no cost to buyer.
