Boston School Artist Hermann Dudley Murphy Oil Painting. "Charenton". Signed - $6,500 - (Kingston, NY)
For sale is a superb and original oil painting by the well listed Boston School artist and picture frame maker Hermann Dudley Murphy (1867-1945) This painting was purchased from a sale in South Carolina and we'd love to see it return to Boston or remain in the Northeast. However it remains for sale to any collector of his work. This painting features an impressionist style landscape with a meandering canal stream and a footbridge and buildings in the distant. To the left of the canal there is a walking path which winds around the shape of the waterway. The brushstrokes have an impressionist form with the artist capturing the affect of light upon the landscape very well. The painting is titled "Charenton" on labels both from Graham Galleries on Madison Ave NYC, and Poland Springs Gallery of Maine. This is for Charenton du Cher France. Charenton-le-Pont is a commune in the southeastern suburbs of Paris, France. There is a canal there with several canal bridges. Robert Henri visited and captured a similar scene of this canal bridge in a painting. There is another partial label near the hanging fixture on the back that is from Stedman & Wilder, an old Boston based picture hanging firm. There is pencil inscription on the board panel stating "Copley Hall Boston" as well as another Hermann D Murphy signature in black chalk or crayon. The painting is signed in Murphy's known cipher(monogram) in the lower left corner.(see picture). The painting has not been removed from the frame. We are unsure if this is an original early Hermann Dudley Murphy frame or not but we it appears original to the painting. Condition: Overall good. Age appropriate wear to gilded picture frame. Gesso chips in areas. Overall good.
