They are only attached at the sides. This is so you can carry skis there if you are of a mind to. Check out pictures 4 & 5 for a unique feature of this pack. You can loosen straps and then stuff something (hoodie, whatever) behind the front compartment and in front of the main compartment. Picture 6 shows the inside of the front compartment.
