Neumann U87Ai - U87 with Shockmount - $2,199 - (La Jolla, CA)
Neumann U87Ai SN: 67281 Based on the serial number manufacture date is mid to late 1990's, according to the Neumann home office. This classic microphone is in really great condition. Has that classic sizzle and U87 warmth. Used it to record vocals for a couple of albums and as a drum overhead (with -10db). As a mono drum overhead this mic is amazing, the toms sounded better on it than the close up mics, you could really sense the wood in the sound and it gave a nice 3D feel on drum rolls. Symbols were crystal clear. Also, used it as the only drum mic about 4ft off the ground a few feet in front and angled toward the kick everything came out great, including the kick, and snare had a lot of attack. On vocals it is taylor made for a tube preamp. I used it with the Avalon 737. It was really easy to get a nice warm sound, with a little sizzle (not distortion), and a lot of presence. For the drums I used it with the Avalon AD2022 solid state amp. Here it sounded very transparent and clean. Very versatile and fun mic.
