Antique Black Forest Jewelry Trinket Box - $285 - (Manti, UT)

We always watch for black forest items when in Paris and sometimes find one that is just extra special. This is one of those. Carved by extraordinarily gifted Swiss or German craftsmen, in the late 1800's, these boxes were treasures in their day, rare and expensive, and that is even more true today. Ones that have survived usually show a fair amount of damage to the delicate carvings. This one has but one flaw, a small chip out of a leave that is very difficult to detect. Take a close look at the pictures and see what you think. It is oval shaped,not large, 7.5 inches long, 5 inches wide, five inches tall and weighs 14 ounces. The interior is a blue velvet like cloth with small cord piping around the corners, is very clean, without odor, and may be original. The lock works and the key may be original, and the lid shuts tightly without any warping present. Sadly, the maker is unknown and it is a shame they typically did not sign their work. The foliage carving on the top is very nice and our pictures show it clearly along with the leaf chip, about 1/4 of an inch in size. We have had some nice ones of these Black Forest Carvings and hope this one is just what you have been searching for. It would be a wonderful gift for a special person, yourself, mother, friend, or wife.
