Himalayan Nepal Shaman’s (Jhakri) Hand Drum (Dhyangro) circa 1890’s - $1,200 - (North Vancouver District, BC)

Here’s a great object which was used by a Nepalese Shaman (a Jhakri) for shamanistic rituals. It dates to the last decade of the 19th century (1890’s). The best thing about these frame drums is their beautiful handles (somewhat similar to a Tibetan Kila or Phurba) which depict 3 ancestor faces and abstract stylized intertwined serpents. This specimen’s wooden handle has a gorgeous oily patina which indicates that it was much handled by the shaman who owned (and possibly manufactured) it. The drum skin is animal hide (a Yak’s) and the shell made of wood and tree bark. It’s an old specimen; hence, not in mint condition….(normal wear is commensurate with old age)…..but overall…in great condition for its 100+ year old age. JUST SEE PHOTOS…….A BEAUTIFUL AND POWERFUL SPECIMEN!! Measurements Overall length……….26 inches (66 cms) Drumhead diameter……….14 inches (36 cms) Handle length………………..12 inches (30 cms) Provenance Ex British collection….for many years Ex Indian Businessman art collection…….1980’s Ex Canadian Antique dealer’s collection…….1990’s – 2010 Present Canadian collection…………………..2010 – 2017 *****A GREAT & POWERFUL TRIBAL ASIATICA OBJECT.
