Impressive Winiama Plank mask with Spirit Couple, African mask, African Art - $395 - (Perkasie, PA)
DescriptionTall carved wooden plank mask decorated with various geometric designs and with two figurative finials of female spirits. The mask face is classic for the Winiama peoples and features widely spaced "target" eyes, a hooked nose, tab ears, a wide open mouth showing upper and lower teeth, and, below the chin, a handle by which the mask could be held during its athletic dances. The coloring is black, white, and red. This mask probably represents a bush spirit, protective of its community, and was danced often at dry season rituals and especially at elders' funerals. Measures 42 x 13 inches. *** The mask display stand was used for photography purpose only and is not included, the mask is too top heavy for a stand and should be hung.ConditionOverall well worn, good condition.
