Original Missouri Indian Axe Batwing Cutouts Iron Head Ash Stem Mid 1800's Rare! - $880 - (Bluff City, TN)
Original old Missouri Indian axe and super nice beaded drop. From the Great Plains Indian culture. Very nice old iron trade head with super rare batwing cutouts. Superb ash wood haft that really shows some age and patina. There is still remnants of the black paint that once covered the haft. The handle area is worn and polished and really contrasts the area near the head which isn't worn because of no contact with the Indian's hands. The beaded drop is identified to the Sioux Indian people based on geometry and color. This style drop, attached to the mouthpiece with tacks instead of being tied on is called a socket drop. The drop is lazy stitched on brain tan buckskin. Nice fringe on the end. This just a fantastic example! The haft is original to the head. Some age and wear on the handle as pictured. 7" long head and 26" long haft, 16" long drop. Mid 1800's. From my grandparent's estate, original artifact.
