These New Red Fire Leaf lettuce seed are certified organic, non-GMO and open pollinated. (51 days) Red Fire is gaining popularity with market growers. Beautiful, frilly red-edged leaves with a fresh bright green base and interior form a heavy head that makes attractive, tender salads. This popular variety has set the standard for red leaf lettuce for many years. It can be grown spring, summer and fall for full size heads or baby leaf salads. Red Fire is relatively slow, but produces uniform, heavy heads of well-colored, frilly leaves. This lettuce has been almost the last to flower, sometimes lasting as late as July 29 in northern regions. It's also very cold-hardy and does well through most of the winter in tunnels in northern regions. Its tender and sweet flavor has very little to no bitterness. Resists BOR, DM, TB. About 300+ seed per pack. Packed for 2017. Lot #391. 87% germination. Lettuce Culture: May be started indoors in March and at regular intervals thereafter, or sowed outdoors as soon as ground can be worked. Many varieties won't germinate in soil temperatures above 75° and most shut down above 80°. Where available, we present data here from a California germination experiment at 84°. Hardy. All lettuces except icebergs tolerate heavy frost. They grow best in cool weather with medium moisture. Use shade cloth to keep summer lettuce tender and sweet longer. Sow every 2 weeks for continuous supply. Lettuce will not head unless thinned frequently and ruthlessly to final distance of 1'. Heavy nitrogen feeders. Minimum germination soil temperature 35°, optimal range 40-80°, optimal temperatures 70-75°. Emergence takes 3 days at 68°soil temperature. Days to maturity are from direct seeding.
