Ricco Kühn 393 Triple French Horn - $8,500 - (Wenham, MA)
This horn has a yellow brass body and a gold brass bell flare. The valves are in amazing shape with fantastic compression with enough pop to wake up your dog. The High F side has the best match to the rest of the horn of any triple that I’ve ever tried (including one of Ricco's newer, also excellent, triples). The string linkages on the valves provide a smoother ride than the mechanical linkages on the newer triples. The horn can be easily converted to stand in either Bb or F. The tone I get on this horn is full and resonant, warm, but not edgy, with a lovely ringing resonance that gives the horn a great feel and feedback to the player. Just like all Kühn triples I’ve tried, it plays just as well down low as an excellent double, and even better than many. The horn is heavy enough to give it a really solid powerful tone but not so heavy that it’s awkward to hold. The instrument has been very well cared for. Some tiny dings as you’d expect from a used horn and the lacquer is worn in areas. Purely cosmetic issues.
