Amazing Hand-Built Early Reel to Reel Tape Recorder Transport & Tube Electronics - $129 - (Red Lion, PA)
I have never seen anything like the amazing craftsmanship that someone used to hand build - from scratch - their own early reel to reel recorder. I've seen people who could build a tube amp from scratch or bring a woodworking and electronic skills together to restore old radios - but I've never some close to seeing anyone drill out a thick metal plate and mount a working tape transport mechanism on it so that it actually works. Study all twelve pictures and prepare to be amazed. This is top notch all the way. It is in several assemblies that plug together: 1. Output transformer and speaker plugs into electronics unit - has stancor A-3880 output transformer. 2. Main power transformer plugs into electronics unit with octal plug. Stancor PM8407 3. Heads - mounted on transport and plugs into electronics unit. Unmarked that I can see, but a nice chrome unit with drop down door 4. Fan - just a fan 5. Main electronics unit has 12AX7 and 12AT7 along with eye tube - the eye tube lights up when you press record I plugged everything together (It's obvious) and tested it. The electronics powered up with no problem and there was some hum in the speaker. I have no tape to test. The record function seems to work as the eye tube lights when you enable it. Both play and rewind work fine mechanically with the very large and heavy motors. Pressing the red button engages a couple of relays and provide Fast Forward. Again, it's smooth and powerful. The workmanship on this is superb. It's neat to see the little pencil marks the person used to mark places to drill or mount. If you collect tape recorders, you will not likely find another. This is quite heavy - the transport assembly with its two powerful motors weighs 24 pounds. Proper packing will being the total up to about 36 pounds. One more point - in order to ship, the various assemblies should be bubble wrapped separately. In order to separate them, three wires are cut, but putting them back is super easy - blue goes to blue, red
