About the artist: Salvatore was born in 1931 in Detroit, MI. to a traditional Italian family, which had a background in the marble industry. His father once owned a marble quarry in Sicily, immigrated to the U.S. in the late 1920's, and went into business by building one of Detroit Michigan's first marble cutting and finishing plants. Salvatore worked there, but developed an interest in the product which extended beyond the practical application as table tops, building facades and fireplace mantles. Salvatore's passion for work with stone lasted throughout his life. He also worked extensively in oils, pen and ink and pencil drawings. His inspiration came from the beauty of the countryside, the streets of Detroit, and of course the female form. Later in his life he also found much inspiration in Greek mythology. Some of his influences were; Jean Arp, Brancusi, Henry Moore, Diego Rivera, Paul Klee, Picasso, and Paul Gauguin. All sales are final.
