TT FR 299 1891 $10 SILVER CERTIFICATE "TOMBSTONE" RARE PCGS 66 PPQ GEM NEW 1891 $10 Silver Certificate Note with serial number E5595846 with signatures of Tillman and Morgan. Fr# 299 and plate#B13/13. Graded 66 PPQ (Premium Paper Quality) Gem New by PCGS. An extremely rare note in this state of preservation, with PCGS having graded just six examples in 66, with none higher. This is a great example of the Tombstone type, with large margins, ideal centering, terrific color and good original paper embossing, all of which combined has given us a lovely PCGS 66 PPQ note. An absolutely stunning example. No. 85 of the 100 Greatest American Currency Notes. Collectors love nicknames, and "Tombstone Note" is a long-standing favorite. Depicted within a tombstone-shaped frame is Thomas A. Hendricks, perhaps a candidate for a tough question in Trivial Pursuit or Jeopardy! Who was he? The answer: he was vice president of the United States under the first administration of Grover Cleveland, serving from March 4, 1885, until his death, while in office, on November 25, 1885. For extra credit: he was a nephew of William Hendricks, whose nine-month tenure as vice president in 1865 was almost as short as Thomas'. Likely, when the Series of 1886 Silver Certificates were being conceived, Hendricks' passing was still being mourned, and President Cleveland approved of the posthumous honor conferred upon his erstwhile vice president. The back designs of the Series of 1886 Silver Certificates were ornate in their concepts, across all of the denominations from $1 to the $20, precursors of the even more elaborate Series of 1890 Treasury or Coin Notes. Later, in the early 20th century, the Treasury Department went into mode of simplified motifs. However, in 1886, art was riding high.
