Rarest and scarcest of all Demand Note districts-offices and a brand newly discovered note.Fr. 4. 1861 $5 Demand Note. PMG Choice Fine 12 Net. Noted lightly stained, corner tear. This newly discovered example makes just seven known for this scarce Friedberg number. This note was payable at the Treasury Office in Cincinnati and is the scarcest of the five different locations. PMG notes "Stained, Corner Tear", which are barely present on the back along the left and right center. The overall appearance of the note is very attractive for the grade, having excellent bold overprint colors and nice legible signatures. Track and Price census shows Highest graded to date is F10 selling at a Stacks Sale in 2015 at $17,625. PMG shows only 4 graded to date. This the rarest of Demand Notes from 1861---a miracle survival specimen.The note was payable at the Cincinnati Treasury Office and, it is the scarcest of the several Treasury offices throughout the US at that time engraved in and around 1861 $5 Demand notes. This Fine 12 was until just recently the highest graded. The colors remain poignantly strong and both signatures are noticeably applied and fully legible. It is said that the green reverses of the Demand Notes are the origin of the term Greenback as applied to U.S. paper money in general. This is one of the finest known examples of 6-7 known.
