AFRICAN VINTAGE BAMILEKE BRONZE & CARVED WOOD SMOKING PIPE CAMEROON GRASSLANDS This is a Bamileke Bronze Smoking Pipe. Smoking pipes were made as art objects. They were made to commemorate the king (chief or fon) and their ancestors. The pipe stem is wood and is beautifully carved with a repetitive animal pattern that appears to depict antelopes. The bronze pipe bowl is adorned with male faces, which was typical of the decoration on these pipes. The mouthpiece and pipe bowl are both made of bronze and consequently have a greenish patina. Family provenance dates back to the early 1920's. The pipe measures about 43" long x 9" wide and 8" deep.
