"Shaw" golden oak upright piano – fully restored - $4,500 - (Denver, PA)

This one turned out even better than I hoped. Before WWII hundreds of high-quality piano manufacturers built upright pianos to a standard of quality, not quantity or price. The results are of such high quality that even after 100+ years of use, they are worth rebuilding. And when rebuilt, they're good for another 75–100 years. The gold flecked-oak veneer is a specialty item: few were made because only a certain sort of person preferred it. And that’s probably still true: it’s not for everyone. It was originally darker, and I can stain is darker if desired. This one is remarkably well-preserved, esp considering the original matching bench is still present and in very solid condition. In fact, the whole piano is in very solid condition. The pinblock is perfect, all the pins are tight. The soundboard is perfect, never any cracks or separation. The bass bridge cap has been replaced with the hardest wood available: Brazilian cherry. The keys and action are in excellent condition. So what was left to restore? In a word, felts. New hammer heads, new damper felts, new key bushing felts, all trapwork felts and leathers, and a whole slew of internal action felts and leathers. The rest of the restoration was just the usual: new strings and tuning pins, and of course lots of reinforcing, cleaning, polishing, lubricating, aligning, regulating, etc... No detail was overlooked. This is a hobby as well as a job for me. :-) I even replaced the missing mute rail... AKA practice rail. Attached to the center pedal this lowers a strip of felt in front of the hammers so you can practice even if someone’s taking a nap in the next room. But of course, what really sells these classic uprights is the sound, with the touch a close second. Huge strings and an enormous soundboard give this the sound quality of a mid-size grand. Why should you take my word for it? This is just to convince you to come play it. I trust the sound will sell it. :-) This is my 39th rebuild. 55" tall, 26" d…
