Vintage 1890's Pollmann Professional Banjo - $995 - (Fairview, TN)
Here is a beautiful little 1890's "pony" banjo from Pollmann. It has a 10" head, a 23 3'4" scale length, and is 34" in length overall. These banjos were made by Pollmann Co., a New York company which existed from 1848 until 1914. Their specialty was parlor instruments. This instrument came from an estate in Tennessee Walking Horse country and was originally carried in a small leather bag (completely rotted out) that attached to the pommel of a saddle. It used gut strings but is now fitted with NylGut banjo strings. The neck is mahogany and the ebony fret board is absolutely incredible for the color and lack of grain. The instrument is completely original except for the tailpiece (modern No-Knot from StewMac) and the bridge. Tuners work fine and the buttons are not broken. The frets are in excellent condition but could stand a little trimming on the ends where the neck has shrunk slightly. The action is very good across the entire fretboard. These instruments tune low: currently A,D,F#, A, with the drone string tuned octave D. They can go as high as F but not to the standard G banjo tuning. It will not support steel strings. It doesn't have a case but will fit in a tenor banjo case with some padding. We'll ship it in a chipboard tenor case. These have become somewhat popular again so why buy a reproduction when you can have the real thing? Thanks for looking....
