Tillandsia fuchsii v. gracilis - $2 - (Owosso, MI)

Tillandsia aeranthos is native to Mexico and Guatemala and has some of the smallest, thinnest leaves of any Tillandsia. This small plant has multiple long, silvery leaves and produces vibrant red-orange and purple flowers. They stand out as a very unique plant with its symmetrical pincushion shape and are generally between 1-2” in size. Commonly known as an “air plant”, Tillandsias are specialized bromeliads that grow attached to trees high up in the canopy of the forest. Therefore, they have adapted to being rained on and then quickly drying off from the abundant airflow. Since they are an epiphyte, they do not grow in soil and receive their nutrients from light and water. Because of this, they’ve steadily risen in popularity over the past few decades due to their ease of care and exotic appearance. They should never have long-term standing water on their leaves and have moderate to high lighting needs - they cannot tolerate low lighting and will perish. In general, they are considered slow growers. Being a bromeliad, they will form clumps consisting of the mother plant surrounded by “pups”, or younger plants that grow off of the mother plant for reproduction. Container Gardens/Terrariums/Houseplant: Tillandsias are used in a wide variety of crafts, since they come in so many eye-catching forms and also because of their ease of care. They can do well in any container gardens, terrariums or as houseplants as long as they receive frequent mistings and have high air flow to dry out in-between each misting. Most species will do well with a weekly showering or misting, but it’s not a bad idea to just dunk larger specimens in a container of water for no more than 20 minutes weekly. They can make excellent focal point subjects, especially when in bloom.
