Offered for sale is an impressive and important painting by Vincent Jannelli, American, 1882-1962. The painting is of the Newark, New Jersey rooftops in the area of the Newark School of Industrial and Fine Arts looking east toward Manhattan, New York City, New York. TITLE; View Across the Newark Rooftops to New York, 1934 Signed Vincent Jannelli and dated 1934 (lr) MEDIUM: Oil on canvas DIMENSIONS: 30 1/8 x 46 inches Framed: Yes, in an approx 1 inch-wide metal silver/aluminum shadow frame. EXHIBITED: Possibly under the title "Modern Beauties" at the National Academy of Design (NAD) and the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts (PAFA). The "beauties" would have been the two buildings in the center of the painting -- the Lefcourt Building at 1180 Raymond Boulevard, and the Newark and Essex Savings Bank at 744 Broad Street. The Lefcourt (on the left) was a neo-Gothic structure completed in 1930 while the Newark Bank (on the right), of a more modern Art Deco design with the top that resembles the Mausoleum of Halicarnassus, was completed in 1931. They would have been much admired and fresh at the time the artist painted the view in 1934. Condition: Glue relined. Frame rubbing. Scattered craquelure throughout. Scattered touches of inpaint in the sky. Inpaint around the birds in the sky at the upper left quadrant. There is an irregularly shaped repaired tear in the sky at center, an area approximately 1 x 1 - 1/2 inches. There is no further restoration visible under black (UV) light. The photos show a brown triangle speck above the tall building on the right. That speck is due to the camera lens; there is no such speck on the canvas surface.
