A Very Fine Old Senufo Dance Mask, African mask, African Art - $650 - (Perkasie, PA)

This is a very fine old Senufo mask from The Ivory Coast, West Africa. Carved wood with elaborate details and a few areas of painted pigment. Of note: The mask is very thinly carved, evidence of a master carver. The Senufo would wear these small, finely carved face masks as insignia. The masks, known as kpeliye'e, feature delicate oval faces with geometric projections at the sides. Raised and incised scarification patterns ornament their smooth, glossy surfaces. Considered feminine, the masks honor deceased Senufo elders with their grace and beauty. The mask has been mounted to a wooden display stand, and the mask itself measures 11.5 x 6 inches.Very well weathered, obvious field use and wear. Overall Good condition.
