Roman Carved Carnelian Gem with Roman Glass Beads - C. 100 - 300 AD - $360 - (Fairfield, IA)

Presented here: I sometimes make jewelry incorporating some of the antiquities I have collected for several decades. The centerpiece of this necklace is a Roman carved carnelian gem with original high karat gold wire loop. (The bail is of modern manufacture.) It dates from roughly 100 to 300 AD. The blue glass beads are also of Roman origin from roughly the same time period. The round carnelian beads were probably made in India and traded into Africa several hundred years ago, possibly as early as the 1,200’s AD. Strung with modern gold filled accent beads. The chain link is 14 kt gold. The clasp is PermaGold, a highly durable 24 kt gold plate with a lifetime guarantee against tarnishing. Length: 18". Matching earring included. Gold filled ear wires.
