About the set: The 2016 American $1 Coin & Currency Set, celebrates the contributions of the Native American Code Talkers during World Wars I and II. The 2016 American $1 Coin & Currency Set is a wonderful pairing of a 2016 Native American $1 Coin from the U.S. Mint and a distinctive $1 note produced by the Bureau of Engraving and Printing. Struck at the San Francisco Mint with an enhanced uncirculated finish, the reverse (tails) design of the 2016 Native American $1 Coin features two helmets and two feathers that form a “V,” symbolizing victory, unity and the important role that code talkers played in World War I and World War II. It includes the inscriptions “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “$1,” “WWI,” “WWII,” and “CODE TALKERS.” This coin is the eighth in the series of coins honoring Native Americans and the important contributions made by Native American tribes and individual Native Americans to the development and history of the United States. The language and dialects of code talkers became our country’s secret means of communication, which was critical to winning the war. This marked the first time in modern warfare that transmission of messages in native languages was used for the purpose of confusing an enemy. This code was used extensively during the wars and proved to be unbreakable.
