Antique Native American Eagle Longleaf Pine Needle Pinecone Handled Basket - $2,750 - (Mccalla, AL)

This is what I believe to be an important and rare Native American, possibly Missionary woven basket. The obvious materials are pine needles and pine cones.  The basket has some sort of lining with an over lining of either dyed paper or very dry silk fabric that feels like paper. The basket is handled with the body being in the distinct shape of an eagle with wings spread.  It is in astounding condition and I have found nothing in comparison to the materials other than a smaller simple Coushatta basket that will be listed at a later time. The basket measures approximately 14" across at its widest. From the base to where the handle begins measures 12".  From the jointer of the handle to the top center of the handle is 8". The basket has a total height of an impressive 20".  The base is 5" deep and 7" in width.  Please see all photos for a visual description. This basket was in the estate of a lifetime collector. The gentleman collected primitives and pottery.  His wife collected baskets. They were educators and spent their summers traveling the US and collecting treasures.  We will be listing many other wonderful items.
