Rose Cree (1921-2004) Chippawa/Ojibwe Lg Turtle Mountain ND Willow Basket 18" - $70 - (Alto, NM)
This is one of a small collection of Turtle Mountain Willow baskets that I acquired from an estate here in NM. The card that came with them said they were woven by Rose Cree (1921-2004), Chippewa (Ojibwe) of North Dakota. Rose and her husband Francis were highly regarded elders of the tribe, and Rose can be credited with helping preserve the skill of basket weaving in her tribe. Her baskets have been featured at the Smithsonian's Festival of American Folk Life in Washington DC. Her husband Francis would cut willow branches and fashion them into frames, and Rose would do the actual weaving using willow soaked in water. Her baskets can be found in museums across the US and Canada. This large basket is 18" across and stands about 5" to the top of the handle, and is about 15.5" across the top. The basket is more a brown than the reddish color in the photos. PayPal only, payment within three days of close of bidding. Sale is final unless there is an error in the listing. The photographs are part of the description. Shipping estimate is just that and will be adjusted to winning bidder's zip code. Please email with any questions prior to bidding, and thank you for looking.
