Official 1901 William McKinley Inaugural Medal - $200 - (Tucson, AZ)

Medal celebrating the second inauguration of President William McKinley, 1901. Bronze. Joseph K. Davison Co., Philadelphia. OBV: Bust of McKinley to left; inscription around, SECOND INAUGURATION OF WILLIAM McKINLEY, encircled by bosses. REV: In a recess, representation of the United States Capitol, the date, MAR 4, 1901, below; inscription on raised border, WILLIAM McKINLEY PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES - THEODORE ROOSEVELT VICE-PRESIDENT; a single boss at 6:00. This is the first official inaugural medal, and was not available for sale to the public but reserved for members of the Committee. According to Dusterberg, dies were prepared by the U.S. Mint and sent to Philadelphia to the Davison Company where the issue was struck. The number of bronze medals is not known, but estimated at 2000-3000. Gold specimens were presented to McKinley and Roosevelt. The engraver is not known, but "the medalist's art is well represented in the fine likeness of the President and the intricacy of detail on the reverse where even the window frames on the Capitol are visible."
