•Antique Mahogany Piano Forte by John Geib & Sons Attributed to Duncan Phyfe•Antique mahogany pianoforte by John Geib. Accompanying note reads, "Piano forte, John Geib and Son; Case attributed to Duncan Phyfe, New York City, 1804-1814.Mahogany, satinwood (secondary woods: mahogany, white pine, ash) Gift of Eric M. Wunsch 1969 (69.259) The case, richly ornamented with highly figured veneers, reeding and gilt lion's heads, exhibit the meticulous craftsmanship of the finest New York furniture of its time. It was probably made by Duncan Phyfe in 1815, a notice appeared in a New York newspaper advertising that John Geib, Jr. could be found in Phyfe's shop. Though most pianoforte actions were imported during this period, Geib made his own." Plaque above keyboard reads, "Improved Patent W. Geib, 5th Avenue & 170 Broadway, New York". •Overall condition is Good. Piano is not in working condition; in need of structural tightening; some losses.
