18TH CENTURY COLCHESTER CONNECTICUT CHIPPENDALE CHERRY DESK - $5,800 - (Springfield, MA)
IMPORTANT 18TH CENTURY CHIPPENDALE CHERRY DESK COLCHESTER CONNECTICUT INSCRIPTED "URIAH PALMELEE SEPT 18, 1786-FEB 17, 1849" With our highest praise and compliments we are honored to offer you this outstanding 18th Century Colchester, Connecticut Chippendale cherry desk. It possesses a nicely scrolled and cyma formed base apron, scrolled drop pediment, on ogee formed bracket feet clearly identifying its Colchester attribution. The case is entire dovetailed joined with dovetailed styles. Its interior is exceptionally well done with two tiers of drawers, scrolled valance moldings and a concealed valance drawer. We note that drawer possessing a very old pencil inscription attributing a family provenance to "Uriah Palmelee September 18, 1786-February 17, 1849". The desk comes to us from a colleague who obtained it from an old Guilford, Connecticut estate strongly indicating that it has spent its entire existence in Guilford, Ct. Uriah Palmelee was the father of the more historically noted Uriah Henry Palmelee (abolitionist, civil war hero and close connection to Yale). The desk possesses four graduated thumb molded drawers, loafers, original lock, original untouched hinges (its rare to find these desks when the lids have not been removed and repaired), old brasses and a great old crusty varnish finish. The desk has a rich glowing orange amber color. We note very typical interior drawer frame restorations (these were made from pine and poplar which almost always disintegrated over the last 250 years) and replaced back panels and one small foot restoration to the base of the left front leg. We practice a full disclosure policy and describe items to the very best of our ability. It possesses very nice pilaster carved quarter columns and nicely hand chamfered secondary drawer panels. It is 37" long, 18 1/2" wide and is 41" tall.
