Mah-152: 1# Hydrozincite, Hemimorphite & Calcite, Mahoney, Fluorescent Minerals - $20 - (Alto, NM)

We dug this 1 lb. rock out of a sand & dirt-covered mine dump at a small unnamed prospect in the Mahoney Mining Area, south of Deming, NM. (The mining area is so picked over now that we need to dig through the dumps to find rocks like this one.) In our daylight photo #5 the rock is a mix of white and tan minerals. Under short wave lamp the specimen glows with light blue hydrozincite, pale blue phosphorescent aragonite, and royal blue hemimorphite in a matrix of orange caliche at the top two thirds of the rock, and a pale red calcite layer at the bottom (photos #1-3). Under long wave lamp, the caliche glows orange and some of the aragonite pale blue (photo #4). Photo #5: Ken stands above one of the collecting areas at Mahoney, which produced mostly zinc & lead ores from small mines & prospects in the early 1900s.Weighs 1 lb. 1 oz. & measures 4.5 x 2.5 x 2.0 inches.
