AN EXQUISITE ALBUM WITH 63 HAND PAINTED YUZEN DYEING PATTERNS ON 39 PAGES Offering: An exquisite album with 63 hand painted yuzen dyeing patterns on 39 pages, chiefly showing Tegaki-yuzen for karinui with twelve pages showing design variations. The mineral and vegetable pigments were made in the traditional way, finely ground and lightly bound with hide glue, giving the colors, which retain their original freshness and brightness, a distinct sheen. The designs were executed with a variety of brushes on a superior grade Seichosen Kozo paper with a natural, warm, light yellow color. 60 designs were done with a palette of restrained colors and ink, employing a wide variety of blues, browns and greens with three of the pages finely done in sumi with light, delicate color. Three pages were done in sumi. Artist: Unattributed. The artist had training in a Shijo-Maruyama school. Date: Not dated. Some of the decorative patterns can be dated by style to the late Meiji, or Taisho period. Format: Royal yellow, blind printed wrappers sewn with 4-stab holes in the Fukuro-toji style. Size: 254 x 174 mm Yzen: The technique is credited to the fan painter, Miyazaki Yzen, who worked in Kyoto during the Genroku era of the Edo Period. The pictorial design is first drawn with spiderworts juice onto a plain white patterned cloth cut in kimono shape, the outline starched with rice paste to prevent dye bleed and assembled on the kimono.
