Rookwood Pottery is known for having many women artists on staff over its long life span. But it also, very interestingly, has the distinction of being the first manufacturing company in the United States founded by a female. Maria Longworth Nichols started Rookwood Pottery in Cincinnati, Ohio in 1880. Description: Rookwood “Iris” wall pocket, produced in 1921 and covered with a rich, semi-crystalline blue mat glaze. Marks include the Rookwood logo, date and shape 1083. Height is 12 5/8 inches. In excellent original condition with no crazing and interesting character to the glaze.
