1990 Gibson Earl Scruggs Mastertone Banjo with "The Gibson" Hardshell Case - $3,195 - (Peru, IN)
Up for auction is a 1990 Gibson Earl Scruggs Mastertone Banjo with the original Gibson hardshell case.The serial number is 1855. This banjo was recently acquired from the estate of the original owner. The original owner purchased the instrument new but never attempted to learn to play. The banjo was put away in it's case and left in a closet since that time. I got this information from the son-in-law of the original owner. This banjo has a wonderful and loud tone. It's very obvious from the condition of this banjo, it was never played. The metal on the tone ring is a bit tarnished but can be buffed to it's original shine. I cleaned a small part of the tone ring but have chosen not to clean the entire ring. The banjo head tuning lugs have a bit of corrosion but turn freely. The arm rest and tailpiece are in excellent condition with no wear. there is NO fret wear and NO fingerboard wear whatsoever. The tuning machines are in excellent condition with the 2nd and 3rd machines having the drop-tuning funtion. The wood resonator is in excellent condition with all the binding intact. The back has the normal finish crazing typical of Gibson instruments of this age. There are NO scratches on the resonator. The neck is in excellent condition with NO scratches and NO wear. The fingerboard inlays and logo and headstock inlays are all in excellent condition. The case with "The Gibson" logo is in very good condition with a very small bit of tarnish on the hardware. All latches, hinges, button feet and leather handle are in very good working order. The fabric cover in the case is intact and in excellent condition. The case pocket is in excellent condition with the pocket door intact and in excellent condition. All the original contents of the case are included. These items include the original Gibson warranty paper, the Gibson USA Owners Manual, the head tuning key, the truss rod wrench/phillips screwdriver and case lock keys.
