VintageAfrican Chokwe Tribal Mask, Helmet, Congo Wood and Cowrie Shells - $540 - (Montrose, CO)

This is an impressive Chokwe mask, mid 20th century. The Chokwe people are an ethnic group in central and southern Africa, including, the Congo. I've never seen a hand on a mask, and there's no known reason for this one! The masks were used both for spiritual, and for entertainment, purposes, and would represent ancestors or various character types. This one is what's known as a Mwano Pwo mask, representing an ideal of female beauty. This was custom made to fit this role, but my research is not finding any particular reason for the hand--it's something that meant something to the maker or wearer. The wood mask itself is 12" long total is over 22" with the hair missing a few beads other than that amazing condition. Shipping and insurance included.
